Some interesting things coming up!

I plan to submit a piece into the national open art competition, there’s about 6 weeks to go but I’m hoping I can paint something within that time!
I will be volunteering at ‘Beach Buggin’ for the ‘Icklepickles’ charity, I am also working on some pieces for them to auction off for charity :)
I am currently working on a scrap book for a friend who did an amazing 5 marathons in 5 days all for charity last year.

The modern illustrator I am going to look at and compare with Kathleen Hales style is: Sara Midda.

Sara’s work is usually in the style of a sketch book, her most well known books are ‘In and Out of the Garden’ and ‘Sara Midda’s South of France’ they are delicate small illustrations and observations using watercolours.

I have chosen Sara as I really love her work and also as I wanted to use another female illustrator to inspire me.

The process of my illustration in the style of Kathleen Hale.

I chose to draw the character in colouring pencils and water colours, this was the nearest I could get to the look of her work. I then put the title on using Photoshop.

I’ve really been neglecting my illustration course, so I have tried to focus myself today!

For the history of illustration exercise I chose to look at Kathleen Hale, I found her illustration style very difficult to reproduce, it is very different to my usual style and I was not too happy with the results, I think this is because my style is very precise and exact whereas her style is fairly loose and more expressive.

I chose to draw my cat George as the main character and I chose the Jubilee as the theme as it seems to be the focus of everything at the moment!

The photos that follow are from the ideas stage to the final finished image.

Notes:

I did find that the work of Kathleen Hale was quite old fashioned, this maybe because of two things; the first is that the subject matter seems a little dated and the second is that the style is reminiscent of old children’s books I used to read. On another hand, I found that her illustrations could also appear fairly modern looking as she used very bright colours and the images were very busy.
The main reason I was attracted to choose Kathleen Hale was that she was the only female to choose from! so as a female I felt obliged to support her. Also when I looked at her work I could see that we had another thing in common -cats! so that was a deal breaker really.
Kathleen Hale produced her work by hand drawn lithography, the technique used is by drawing/etching directly onto the printing plate, this meant she could control the colour and saturation used in the printing process.
